We aimed to get the community involved in giving back through a simple drive — by matching each like on our Caribou Tee post on Instagram with a donation.
On Christmas, after receiving 96 likes on our Caribou Tee post, we walked across San Francisco, giving out our shirts to the homeless on the streets. The next day, we donated the rest to St. Anthony’s to reach low income families across the Bay Area through their Free Clothing Program.
WE’D LIKE TO THANK ST. ANTHONY’S FOR WORKING WITH US, THE SF EXAMINER AND KTSF FOR SPREADING AWARENESS OF OUR CAUSE, AND EVERYONE WHO SUPPORTED THE DRIVE!
THE CARIBOU TEE The caribou, more commonly known as the reindeer, is often depicted pulling Santa’s sled, serving as a harbinger of the joy of Christmas. Despite its role in American culture and its recurring prominence at the end of every year, there are only less than a dozen of one subspecies, the woodland caribou, left in the entire United States.
Although not all subspecies are endangered, two are already extinct, while the populations of others are dwindling, which is why caribou are listed on the IUCN Red List as vulnerable. Threats that they face include human-induced climate change, which alters their habitats and facilitates the spread of parasites, and human activities that directly destroy the ecosystems they live in. The decline of the caribou population is a continuum of the same human disregard that threatens the existence of others species across the world, but we hope spreading awareness of our impacts can lead to protective regulations and a reduction in our contributions to the problems.
